SOUTH LUANGWA NATIONAL PARK
- Overview
Widely regarded as one of the world’s premier wildlife destinations, South Luangwa National Park offers an unparalleled safari experience. Its extraordinary concentration of wildlife along the Luangwa River and its iconic oxbow lagoons makes it a true gem of Africa’s wilderness.
The Luangwa River, one of Africa’s last unspoiled major river systems, serves as the lifeblood of this vast 9,050km² (5,623mi²) park. This pristine sanctuary is home to an incredible array of wildlife, vegetation, and birdlife. South Luangwa is also the birthplace of the renowned walking safari, providing an unmatched opportunity to explore the bush on foot, up close and personal with nature in its purest form.
The park’s diverse landscapes transform dramatically with the seasons, from the dry and golden bushveld of the winter months (April to October) to the vibrant, green paradise of summer (November to March). Over 60 mammal species, including elephants, lions, leopards, and hippos, call this park home, alongside a remarkable array of more than 400 bird species. Unfortunately, rhinos are no longer present, having been poached to extinction in the region.
For bird enthusiasts, South Luangwa is nothing short of paradise. With nearly 400 of Zambia’s 732 bird species recorded here—including 39 birds of prey and 47 migratory species—there’s always something to marvel at, no matter the season.
The park’s vegetation adds another layer to its rich appeal. Majestic trees like mopane, leadwood, winterthorn, marula, and tamarind are abundant, alongside ancient baobabs and serene ebony forests. During your visit, you’ll discover exotic wildflowers and gain a deeper appreciation for Zambia’s unique flora.
South Luangwa National Park offers an unmatched opportunity to connect with nature in its most authentic form. Whether on a walking safari, game drive, or birdwatching expedition, every moment here is bound to be unforgettable.
